Hello Everyone

We look forward to seeing you tonight at the There for You concert rehearsal.

Today is the feast day of St Martin of Tours from whose story we derived the concept of the Purple Cloak program.

The following summary appears on the Playing Our Part website.

https://playingourpart.net/program/

“As he rode towards the town one winter day, Martin noticed near the gates a poor man, thinly clad, shivering with cold and begging alms.

He saw that none who passed stopped to help the miserable fellow.

He had nothing with him but the clothes he wore, but, drawing his sword from its scabbard, he cut his great woolen cloak in two pieces, gave one half to the beggar and wrapped himself in the other."

The idea of The Purple Cloak comes from the story of Martin, an eighteen year old Roman soldier stationed at Amiens in France around 334 AD, who gave half his cloak to a man in need.

Giving something to those in need is reflected in the idea that today we can make a difference if we all give a part of our “cloak” whether it be money or time, sharing knowledge or using our skills to help alleviate the homelessness situation.

The concert marks the public launch of Playing Our Part and our fundraising efforts through the arts to implement the Purple Cloak program and as a community make a difference to the homelessness situation in Melbourne.

Thank you for playing your part.
